IPERC's Origin

Storm Damage

Changing climate and shifting weather patterns are pointing to more frequent and more severe weather events in the years ahead. This will put increasing pressure on emergency services and local shelter capacity as more people are affected by natural disasters.

In response to these trends, the Evanston, Illinois, Fire Department's Emergency Management Agency launched an effort in 2023 to expand disaster shelter capacity through a collaboration with houses of worship. The idea was that many faith-based institutions have facilities with large spaces and members who feel called to serve their neighbors and community. Northminster Presbyterian Church of Evanston was the first house of worship to join the effort, and was designated as an American Red Cross Emergency Evacuation Shelter in early 2023.

The Interfaith Preparedness & Emergency Response Coalition (IPERC) was founded in mid-2024 to serve as a central hub for coordinating and supporting this project and the overall effort to improve safety, security, and preparedness at the community level.
