How can We become a Shelter?

How can our House of Worship Establish a Shelter?

Storm Damage

Building consensus within the organization is critical: becoming a designated emergency evacuation shelter represents a commitment by the entire membership. In a serious emergency it will be all hands on deck; everyone needs to be on board.

IPERC can help guide you through every step of the process. Please contact us and let us know that you are interested in becoming a shelter.

  1. Learn more about what it means to be a shelter and what is involved.
  2. Present the idea of a shelter to your members, answer questions, and provide materials.
  3. Poll your members to gauge acceptance and enthusiasm; make sure everyone is on board.
  4. Submit a formal proposal to your governing body for their consideration.
  5. Secure official approval of the shelter project from your governing board.
  6. Follow the steps to formal Red Cross designation and adoption by your governing board.
